Supporting Youth During Ramadan
Let's Do This
Ramadan is a meaningful time for many young people, and small acts of understanding can make a big difference. Fasting, increased prayer, and changes in routine can be challenging, so showing empathy and flexibility helps youth feel supported.
- Check in with students – A simple “How are you doing today?” shows you care.
- Be mindful of energy levels – Fasting youth may be more tired, especially in the afternoon. If possible, avoid scheduling physically demanding activities late in the day.
- Offer a quiet space – Some young people may prefer a quiet place during lunch instead of being around food.
- Acknowledge, don’t assume – Not every Muslim youth fasts, and each family observes Ramadan differently. Let students share their experience if they choose.
- Celebrate in a meaningful way – Recognize Eid al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan with a simple “Eid Mubarak” (Happy Eid!) or by allowing youth to share what the holiday means to them.
