Recognizing the Warning Signs of Suicide
Let's Do This
September is Suicide Prevention Month. Caring adults can make a huge difference by noticing when a young person might be struggling. Sometimes signs of suicidal thoughts show up in everyday conversations and behaviors. A young person might talk about feeling trapped, hopeless, or like they don’t matter. They may suddenly give away prized possessions, use more alcohol or drugs, or say things like “It won’t matter soon anyway.”
Pay attention to shifts in words, moods, and actions. If you notice warning signs, don’t ignore them—ask how they’re doing and listen without judgment. Let them know they’re not alone and that support is available. If you’re concerned for their safety, connect them with professional help right away.
Stay Inspired
Your awareness could be the turning point for a young person. Simply noticing, caring, and staying present can help them see hope when they feel none.
