Learning History Through Storytelling
Let's Do This
Talking with young people about history can be a challenge. It's difficult to make it interesting, relatable, to know how to approach topics in an age-appropriate way. When youth are struggling to understand and connect with history, storytelling is a great way to make history exciting. Choosing stories and books that align with a young person's age helps then understand in a developmentally appropriate way.
As we celebrate and recognize Juneteenth this week, take some time to read a story about Black history together! You can find a list of books for all ages here.
Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, commemorates African American freedom, yet the struggle for racial equity still exists. While this day marks a time of celebration, it's crucial to remember the ongoing inequities and injustices faced by African Americans. As you join in this year's Juneteenth celebrations, take the opportunity to reflect, educate, and commit to the fight for racial equity with the young people in your life.
