Encouraging School Attendance

Let's Do This

While some absences are inevitable, it’s important to encourage children to attend school every day. September is Attendance Awareness Month and educators, parents, mentors and other caring adults are encouraged to raise awareness of the importance of being in school!

Regular attendance helps children establish a routine, build strong relationships with teachers and peers and improve academic performance. Research shows that when students are chronically absent (missing 10% or more of the school year or 18 days over an entire school year), they are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, achieve in middle school and graduate from high school.  Talk with your young people about the importance of being in school each day and make a plan for unavoidable absences and making up class work or homework.

Stay Inspired
