Building Routines that Prioritize Wellness

Let's Do This

Having a regular self-care routine is important at all ages. Self-care practices can help improve physical health, reduce stress, increase creativity and problem solving, and improve overall life satisfaction.  Adults can encourage self-care routines for young people by modeling positive habits such as exercising, meditation, and healthy eating. In addition, parents, teachers, mentors, and other caring adults can promote self-care by helping young people build their own routines for regular exercise, journaling, creative expression, and rest.

Stay Inspired

Here are some tips for helping kids build their own self-care routine.

  • Co-create a space at home or in school designated for self-care activities.
  • Encourage attaching self-care to existing habits (i.e. after school have a healthy snack and quite time).
  • Model self-care out loud: “I’m taking a walk because I feel stressed.”
  • Help them create a daily schedule that incorporates self-care practices.
  • Practice self-care alongside them.
