Provide Support

After the Election

Let's Do This

No matter who wins this year's presidential election, the outcome will have big impacts on our lives, and youth may have feelings and questions about what happens. Many of us have been having conversations with youth leading up to the election - what it is, why it's important, the issues being discussed.  It's just as important to follow up with youth after.

Be there to answer their questions, listen to their thoughts and allow them to express their emotions.  Be honest and open with them in return. Talk with them about how to respond if someone disagrees with them or says something that upsets them. Remind them that, no matter who is elected, we all still have to work and advocate for ourselves, our community and the things we believe in.

Stay Inspired

Remember that youth may have strong feelings after big political moments like an election.  They might need to express them or they may have questions. Make space for youth to process and discuss what happened both with you and with their peers. Check out this article from Ed Week about post-election advice for supporting youth.  While it's written primarily for educators, there's a lot of great information that is applicable to all caring adults!
