Using Reflective Listening in Mentoring

Let's Do This

When mentors listen with care and intention, young people feel seen, valued, and understood. Reflective listening helps build trust and encourages deeper conversations. Here are some examples of how to practice reflective listening:

  • Reflect back: Paraphrase what your mentee shares by saying, “What I’m hearing is…”
  • Name feelings: Gently acknowledge emotions by saying, “It sounds like that felt frustrating,” or “That seems exciting.”
  • Ask open-ended questions: Invite reflection with questions like, “What was that like for you?”
  • Pause problem-solving: Focus on understanding before offering advice or solutions
